The recent industry revolutions, lead by technological and digital drivers, are also encompassing the automotive sectors, where Germany, US and China are the industry leaders due to the government support. The implementation of the aforementioned national industrial strategy, which Germany called “Industry 4.0”, will definitely enhance the overall competitiveness of the enterprises and industries, and moreover of the countries themselves.
Generally, the 4.0 revolution related to the automotive industry can be outlined in five main points, according to:
- The impact of internet evolution and the virtual reality
- The implementation of an end-to-end, vertical and horizontal integration industry chains and also for the related industries
- The collection of big data
- The innovation of products and models, which will necessarily lead the hole-cycle innovation
- The transformation of the production, from the “mass approach” to the delivery of a more personalized and customized output
Already in 2012, the United States launched the “National Strategic Plan for Advanced Manufacturing ” which promoted the development of digital manufacturing technologies, with the purpose of reshaping the industrial paradigm through information technology. It was in fact during this time that the concept of “big data” re-emerged. The national push has been fundamental for this Big-data- model to work: the improvement generated by big data is linked to the high number of collected data. More are the alliances among the industry and more integrated their system, more are the insights which should be integrated across all the elements of the industrial chain, from the design to the manufacturing process, from distribution to after sale services. Results cannot be achieved by single enterprises; this revolutionary change has to be promoted by government policies. We can say that in the big data revolution in the automotive industry, the United States was one of the firsts. Since Henry Ford introduced the mass production, the automotive industry has done huge steps forwards towards a more evolved system, able to capture data and to deliver a consumer-centric output.
Nowadays the new trends which are impacting the automotive industry have the real power to reshape the automotive industry, as the shared mobility, the presence of alternative fuels, the emerge of new retails and the importance for the consumers of digital experiences as well as the connectivity. We will see whether the US will still be in the top positions.
